Questions and Answers

Too many nootropic supplements?

I'm taking 5HTP, Tyrosine, Ashwaganda, and Omega 3 for a mood booster and I've noticed a subtle but pleasant effect on my mood and overall outlook. I occasionally add L-Theanine and Ginko Biloba

I've been reading about Inositol and Choline and I want to add that in

Am i over doing-it with the supplements? Should i cut some out? Is anything dangerous?

Any advice appreciated.

There is such a thing as overdoing it, yes.
These particular supplements are generally safe to take together in appropriate doses. Most of those have benefits on brain health (memory, focus, etc) and/or mood support, although Ashwagandha is more for stress and the immune system.

Anyway, Choline and Inositol help more with brain health, but not as much directly for mood support. If you are looking for more mood support, I would go more for SAM-e, 5-HTP, and Rhodiola Rosea as the major ones. Good luck and I hope I helped!

Brain booster Supplement?

Forgetting thing easily recently and needed some brain booster. Not sure if I should buy pure Ginkgo Biloba content or a mixture of Ginkgo Biloba with Phosphatidyl and Vitamin content. Anyone tried some good brand and care to share?

For memory loss try eating more foods rich in Vitamin B1 (thiamine) ie ~ brewer's yeast, whole grain breads and cereals, meat (pork or liver), nuts, legumes such as peas, beans and lentils and potatoes.

Also take a multi B complex supplement including all the B's ie ~ B1, B2, B3, B5, B6 and B12 as they work best as a group….. The B complex of vitamins are essential for a healthy digestive, neural and immune system…… Do not purchase any of the B complex of vitamins individually unless under the specific instructions of a nutritionally oriented physician or naturopath.

The need for B1 (and the B complex) increases when we are stressed, during illness and surgery. B1 has beneficial effects on the nervous system and mental attitude and will also aid in digestion and keep nervous system, muscles and heart functioning normally………… The B complex of vitamins will help bolster your system so as you can better deal with the everyday little dramas life presents for us ♥

It is a water soluble complex and as such our bodies can neither produce or store them. Therefore we need to ingest them on a daily basis or suffer the side affects.

When we are placed under added stress the first group of vitamins to be used up will generally be the B complex and as such we need to adjust our intake accordingly…….. When you are stressed and generally frazzled simply take another B complex supplement. As they are a water soluble group any excess you ingest will simply be excreted in your urine.

Also, an L-glutamine supplement taken 3 times daily on an empty stomach will also bolster a healthy immune and nervous system and assist in maintaining muscle function……. It also helps maintain the health of intestinal flora and thus is a digestive aid ♥ Glutamine is a natural amino acid and a naturally occuring antioxidant and does a marvellous job for me at increasing my level of concentration and for bolstering my ability to retain information ♥

Other nutrients which are said to enhance your memory and make you smarter are ~ Fish oils (those found in cold water fishes such as tuna and salmon do a brilliant of levelling out your moods, stress levels and attention to detail) as other posters have already mentioned, Vitamine E (i would suggest eating more foods rich in Vitamin E as opposed to supplementing), grapeseed extract, lipoic acid, Vitamin B3 (niacin), Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), vitamin B12 (cobalamin),folic acid, choline, gingko biloba (i haven't used it myself so unfortunately am unable to recommend a brand for you), gotu kola ………… Obviously none of them will turn you into Albert Einsteen but you'll surely start remembering where you put your keys though buddy ♥

Things that could be robbing you of your precious B complex of vitamins are :- eating too much protein, alcohol, eating too much tinned food, laxatives and diuretics, antiobiotics, antidepressants, penicillin, prednisone and aspirin, otc cold and flu medicines.

Also, try to cut back on drinks such as caffeine, tea, sodas and soft drinks as they are all B complex thieves…….. As well as being great at dehydrating you.

When you take your daily B complex supplement ensure that you take it with some type of calcium rich food ie: low fat cheese or milk or a calcium supplement that contains vitamin D3 as they all work in conjunction with one another.

Quite a handfull of information here …….. Sorry it's a bit long winded but you need to know all this.

Drink loads of fresh filtered water too as the happiest and healthiest body will always be the most hydrated one.

I sincerely wish you the best of health & vitality buddy♥

take care of you♥

Fluoride supplements for 6 month old?

My son is 6 months old and his dr prescribed fluoride supplements to take daily because we have well water. Fluoride is toxic and doesn't leave your body and is bad for brain development. I'm not really for it.. My inlaws gave their girls the supplements as babies and they've had multiple surgeries in their mouth. Does it sound like a good idea giving it to a baby?

Do NOT give a 6 month old baby fluoride supplements. Here is the recent conclusion made by the Harvard School of Public Health:

"Impact of Fluoride on Neurological Development in Children"

July 25, 2012

For years health experts have been unable to agree on whether fluoride in the drinking water may be toxic to the developing human brain. Extremely high levels of fluoride are known to cause neurotoxicity in adults, and negative impacts on memory and learning have been reported in rodent studies, but little is known about the substance’s impact on children’s neurodevelopment. In a meta-analysis, researchers from Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) and China Medical University in Shenyang for the first time combined 27 studies and found strong indications that fluoride may adversely affect cognitive development in children. Based on the findings, the authors say that this risk should not be ignored, and that more research on fluoride’s impact on the developing brain is warranted.

The study was published online in Environmental Health Perspectives on July 20, 2012.

The researchers conducted a systematic review of studies, almost all of which are from China where risks from fluoride are well-established. Fluoride is a naturally occurring substance in groundwater, and exposures to the chemical are increased in some parts of China. Virtually no human studies in this field have been conducted in the U.S., said lead author Anna Choi, research scientist in the Department of Environmental Health at HSPH.

Even though many of the studies on children in China differed in many ways or were incomplete, the authors consider the data compilation and joint analysis an important first step in evaluating the potential risk. “For the first time we have been able to do a comprehensive meta-analysis that has the potential for helping us plan better studies. We want to make sure that cognitive development is considered as a possible target for fluoride toxicity,” Choi said.

Choi and senior author Philippe Grandjean, adjunct professor of environmental health at HSPH, and their colleagues collated the epidemiological studies of children exposed to fluoride from drinking water. The China National Knowledge Infrastructure database also was included to locate studies published in Chinese journals. They then analyzed possible associations with IQ measures in more than 8,000 children of school age; all but one study suggested that high fluoride content in water may negatively affect cognitive development.

The average loss in IQ was reported as a standardized weighted mean difference of 0.45, which would be approximately equivalent to seven IQ points for commonly used IQ scores with a standard deviation of 15.* Some studies suggested that even slightly increased fluoride exposure could be toxic to the brain. Thus, children in high-fluoride areas had significantly lower IQ scores than those who lived in low-fluoride areas. The children studied were up to 14 years of age, but the investigators speculate that any toxic effect on brain development may have happened earlier, and that the brain may not be fully capable of compensating for the toxicity.

“Fluoride seems to fit in with lead, mercury, and other poisons that cause chemical brain drain,” Grandjean says. “The effect of each toxicant may seem small, but the combined damage on a population scale can be serious, especially because the brain power of the next generation is crucial to all of us.”

* This sentence was updated on September 5, 2012.

Questions and Answers

When is it time to switch to senior dog food?My dog is goin to be 7 in feb. Hes a lab/pit/boxer mix (to be fancy a labpitoxer, sorry had to crack that one) about 78 lbs, and still full of energy… My question is when exactly should i start introducing the senior food into his meals? I really do hate this idea (pretty much because i dont want to think of him getting older… It saddens me) but at the same time i want to switch his food to an affordable, natural product. I work at a petstore, so i get a lil discount, which helps me a bunch (hes not my only baby, but my oldest). I have the options of Solid Gold, which has caught my interest, Organix, natural balance, natural choice, nutro max, avoderm. Solid gold seems to be in my price range. What are some thoughts, to dog foods and switching to senior formulas along with all natural (hes on large breed pro plan at the moment). Any other foods i should be thinking about at other stores? Suggestions?

[display_name id=”1″]Yes, your dog is getting older (something we all hate to see) but there are things you could be doing to help your dog be healthier as he ages and even add a few years to his life (something we all love to see)!
My opinion is that you should make the switch to an all natural food AS SOON AS POSSIBLE and not wait around till your dog reaches that senior stage of his life. Pro Plan well its just not cutting it, it has ingredients that really shouldn’t be in a quality dog food such as fillers (corn, wheat gluten), mystery products (poultry by-product, animal digest and fish meal) and simply not enough meat content a dog needs in it’s diet. I see a great food that you mention, though: Solid Gold (Barking at the Moon). It is completely all natural , good meat content and completely grain free. A couple of foods you could look for are Innova and Canidae All Life Stages (Original): These are very good foods as well. I think Canidae would definately be in your price range if Solid Gold is.
If you choose to switch your dog over to Senior formula then you can do it at around 8-9 years of age. Im not sure if Solid Gold has a senior formula so you’d probably have to add supplements but Canidae has a Senior formula which I would recommend simply because of it’s added nutrients. There are alot age related problems for dogs such as arthritis, kidney diseases and even brain diseases . Senior forumlas contain higher levels of antioxidants, high quality proteins, essential fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and fibre to help combat against these diseases. I think it would be an excellent idea if you made that switch.
*Remeber that anytime you switch dog foods to incorporate the new in with the old slowly adding more until your dog is completely switched over to the new food.
Gingko biloba is it really works for the brain?? Like good for memorization?Has anyone tried it yet?? Thanks.

Description

Can’t remember like you used to? Maybe Ginkgo Biloba could help. Ginkgo Biloba is scientifically proven to improve blood and oxygen flow to the brain and extremities, making it a valuable botanical to enhance memory function, mental sharpness and other cognitive functions. An ideal supplement for seniors and younger persons with active lifestyles.

Some of ginkgo’s actions result from several of its constituents working together, and other actions relate directly to specific constituents. Ginkgo extract seems to affect cognitive deficiency in two ways; it stimulates populations of nerve cells that are still functional, and it protects nerve cells from pathologic influences. Ginkgo flavonoid constituents, which are mainly rutin, are efficient free-radical scavengers. Rutin is known to improve capillary fragility and permeability. Ginkgo contains ginkgolide constituents that competitively inhibit platelet-activating factor (PAF) binding at the membrane receptor.

This action might be responsible for beneficial effects in asthma, bronchospasm, hypersensitivity reactions, and circulatory diseases. Ginkgolides antagonize PAF-induced decreases in myocardial contractility and coronary blood flow, and prevent cyclosporin-induced nephrotoxicity. Ginkgo contains ginkgolides A and B. These exert an anti-stress and neuroprotective effect by decreasing corticosteroid synthesis. Ginkgo leaf extract increases cerebral blood flow. There is some evidence that ginkgo might improve cerebral metabolism and protect against ischemia. Ginkgo leaf extract decreases blood viscosity, improves microcirculatory blood flow, protects neural and retinal tissue from hypoxic or oxidative injury, stimulates choline uptake and prevents age-related decline in muscarinic receptors in the hippocampus. There is some suggestion that ginkgo leaf extract might exert a monoamine oxidase inhibiting effect. There is also some suggestion that it shows some activity against Pneumocystis carinii, arrests fibrosis in damaged hepatocytes, and inhibits nitric oxide production in inflammation. Ginkgo can improve vascular blood flow in the corpus cavernosum by relaxing vascular smooth muscle, which helps erectile function.

Dosage: At least 40 milligrams of the 24% concentrated extract, three times daily for a minimum of three months.

Questions and Answers

What supplements are good for brain health?

I have used drugs such as spice nd alcohol and I'm trying to make my brain more healthy . What are some good vitamins/supplements ? I'm 16.

Posted by babiesmiles
[display_name id=”1″]

As far as supplements, a good multivitamin (like a one a day) will not hurt. B-12 will increase energy too, because getting sober will be hard and draining. I'd go with a previous comment too and try fasting, but if you were a heavy drinker, be careful. Come down slow or you have the potential to shock your body.

I used to suffer from alcohol abuse, what supplements would you suggest for the health of my brain?

I was a light-alcoholic. I know alcohol kills brain cells that will no longer go back. So I'm assuming, unfortunately, I lost some amount of brain cells because of that and I know them they will never come back but everyone loses brain cells at some point. My question is, what supplements would you suggest to, at least, lower the loss of brain cells for the rest of my life?
You are all trolls. I KNOW THAT IM NOT GETTING THEM BACK. What supplements to take in order to prevent further brain cell loss for the rest of my life?

Posted by Sarkis
[display_name id=”1″]

I wouldn't worry so much about supplements for preventing brain cell (neuronal loss).

Our brains are plenty capable of harvesting what we ingest in our diets to provide all the ingredients to keep our brains healthy.

So as far as supplements, I could give you a list of amino acids, nootropics, and vitamins but you wouldn't notice any difference. I'll give you one,.. Fish oil — This has been studied to death and has neuroprotective properties. (You can find this at any pharmacy, walmart, grocery store, etc).

Further — our brains are not static, and our brains are trillions of neurons that have exponential branches of dendrites that are linked via synapses.

You are correct, we all have brain cells die — every day.. All of us, no matter how healthy we are.

Though this is a normal processes of metabolism and biology.

You are not 'brain damaged' from your light alcoholism — unless you notice some real abilities you used to possess that you can no longer do.

Even so,.. Even with some light cognitive impairment — the brain is plastic.. Ie: Neuroplasticity.

This means that your existing neurons (aka: Brain cells) — can and DO form new connections to take the place of any damage, loss of neurons, etc.

This is how we learn. Our brains are not static. We don't develop our brain and it's connections through childhood and hit adult-hood and it then becomes locked or 'static'. This is a very old myth that most still believe in one form or another that neuroscientists have long since disproved.

The fact is everything you learn, ie: A language, an instrument, everyday memories, experiences, how to drive, a sport, etc — Is a process of the brain dynamically changing and these neurons creating dendritic pathways for the 'ability' to perform or remember, etc these tasks.

So with this in mind,.. Just as in stroke victims, or Traumatic brain injury cases you can relearn things lost from "damage" with repetition and practice. It isn't quick, but it happens.

The brain is quite redundant — so cells (neurons) lost don't immediately cause some major malfunction of function. There are generally many fold connections among a huge number of neurons that are responsible for any one function, memory, ability, etc.

Even the notion that we cannot grow 'new' , completely new neurons is highly debated and contested and I suspect with the discovery of active stem cells in our brains that it will soon be debunked that we are 'stuck' with X amount of "brain cells".

Don't worry so much, just focus on your sobriety and you will be fine.

Take care,

Well I eat more fish, cold meats, berries and a bit bran. I do not take a big meal but keep snacking through the day. If you have a big carb meal you will feel sleepy as the body has to deal with a lot of food, so as long as the body has enough and the protein if giving the body strength you should whizz through what you are doing. It works for me, also do some power walking 30 minutes is enough. That lets the brain relax and the body have a simple work out burning just enough calories to keep that up with the brain.

What's your supplement cycle?

Right now I'm on Nitrix/No-Xplode and since you can only use these for 12 weeks, what is a good alternative to cycle to? Please post anything from a good cycle with those products or any other products you may be using and (if you can) why you're using those.

Anabolic Muscle Gain Supplement Cycle
A cycle is a logical and effective pattern that is followed in order to get the best results of the different supplements that are taken. The average length of a cycle is 6 – 12 weeks in duration. The length of time for an off cycle is at least 4 weeks.

Making these cycles up for yourself doesn't require the knowledge of a brain surgeon only common sence. What is shown on this page is just an example. To give you some kind of idea what eveyone else is doing out there. Once you figure out what works well for yourself, you can design your own cycle that will give you maximum gains is the shortest period of time. The short effective cycles are almost always the best.

This cycle is an advanced cycle and may produce incredible muscle mass gains. This powerful combination of sup[plements may also result in incredible pumps, vascularity and hardness.

Omega 3. But supplements aren't very effective.
Daily exercise, puzzles, and a well balanced diet with plenty of fruits and nuts is a thousand times more effective.
Also, since the brain has high percentage of fat (toxins tend to concentrate in fat tissue) a detox might also help.

Questions and Answers

Foods to keep your heart and brain healthy.?Just wondering what are some foods that keep your heart and brain healthy. What foods should I stay away from?

10 points coming!

Posted by Shawn
[display_name id=”1″]Brain Foods:
Blueberries – contain antioxidants, protects against alzheimer’s
Wild salmon – contains healthy fatty acids such as omega 3
Dark chocolate – proven to improve cognitive brain function as well as mood
Tea – improves concentration and alertness
Tomatoes – lycopene helps protect against Alzheimer’s

Heart-healthy:
-Salmon: omega-3 fatty acids
-oatmeal – contains magnesium, potassium and calcium, as well as lots of fiber
-almonds: contain vitamin E, fiber and omega 3 fatty acids
-fruits and vegetables – diets high in the fibers found in fruits and vegetables have been shown to lower cholesterol and prevent heart disease

For better heart health, limit foods with unhealthy fats (such as trans fats and hydrogenated oils, and try using olive oils or cholesterol-lowering margarines such as Smart Balance as an alternative to butter), increase the amount of fruits and vegetables in your diet, choose low-fat proteins (such as egg whites, lean meats and white fish as an alternative to eggs and higher-fat meats).

Brain food(s) are foods that help your brain maintain its health and performance. Fish is a brain food. I think "youth foods" can also be considered brain foods – food like fresh fruits and vegetables (cherries, beets, etc…) and health foods like granola and organically grown foods and whole foods like good old fashioned milk…

Are you with GM food?

Victorian Farmers Federation president Simon Ramsay said there was no evidence of health risk associated with GM crops.

“There is no proof that there are any dangers to your health and we are basing that on science and fact,'' Mr Ramsay said. “

I wonder how they comment on GM food such a short period of time. Fast food revolution happens 50 years ago, now we have side effect of it, Such as increase number of CVD, Cancer, Diabetes, and obesity.

One independent study was conducted by Dr Irina Ermakova of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Female rats were fed GM soy, non-GM soy or non-soy diets prior to conception. Two weeks after birth, 36% of the GM pups weighed less than 20g compared to 6% of the others. Within three weeks, 25 of the 45 (55.6%) rats from the GM soy group died compared to only three of 33 (9%) from the non-GM soy group, and three of 44 (6.8%) from the non-soy contr

Government safety assessments, including those of Food Standards Australia New Zealand, do not identify many of the dangers, and a careful analysis reveals that industry's superficial studies submitted to FSANZ are designed to avoid finding them

Genes inserted into GM soy produce a protein with allergenic properties. Moreover, the only human feeding study ever conducted on GM foods found that those genes had transferred into the DNA of our gut bacteria and remained functional. This means that long after we stop eating a GM food, its potentially dangerous protein may be produced continuously inside our intestines.

GM corn and cotton have genes inserted that produce a pesticide called Bt. If the gene transferred from corn snacks, for example, it could turn our intestinal flora into living pesticide factories. Farmers on three continents link Bt corn varieties with sterility in pigs and cows, or deaths among cows, horses, water buffaloes and chickens. Hundreds of farm workers who pick Bt cotton get allergic reactions.

When sheep grazed on the cotton plants after harvest, one out of four died within a week — about 10,000 sheep died last year. Lab animals fed GM crops had altered sperm cells and embryos, a five-fold increase in infant mortality, smaller brains, and a host of other disturbing problems.

Documents made public by a lawsuit revealed that scientists at the US Food and Drug Administration warned that gene-spliced foods might lead to allergies, toxins, new diseases and nutritional problems.

Although they urged superiors to demand long-term studies, official FDA policy claims they never heard such concerns and that no safety tests are required. The person in charge of that FDA policy was the former attorney for the biotech giant Monsanto — and later the company's vice-president.

In the US, the White House had instructed the FDA to promote GM crops, hoping it would increase US exports. They were wrong. When 25% of US corn farmers planted GM varieties, corn sales to the EU dropped by 99.4%. All corn farmers suffered as prices fell by 13 to 20%. Soy and canola markets also closed, and the US now spends an additional $3 to $5 billion per year in subsidising the GM crops no one wants. The US Department of Agriculture admits that GM crops do not increase farmer profit and can actually hurt incomes; they do not increase yield and often produce less.

Canadian canola yields were down 7.5% and profits plummeted as exports were diverted from the premium-paying EU market to the low-priced Chinese. What was bad for Canada was good for Australia, as Australia captured non-GM markets and soon enjoyed a $63 price advantage.

Food marketers in North America deeply resent GM crops, which don't offer a single consumer benefit. In fact 29% of Americans are strongly opposed to GM foods and believe they are unsafe. A growing number of doctors are prescribing a non-GM diet. Next year, the US natural food industry will remove all remaining GM ingredients and non-GM shopping guides will appear in stores nationwide.

Consumer buying pressure will likely force the entire food chain in North America to swear off GM within the next two years. Such a tipping point was achieved in Europe in April 1999, when virtually all major manufacturers vowed to go non-GM in a single week.

So with all this evidence, why is Australia turning a blind eye to the dangers of genetically engineered foods?

Australia should be sitting down and taking notice of the response to GM foods throughout the world.

With GM markets closing, the negative impact of GM in North America, and the overwhelming evidence of harm from GM food, it is certainly not the time to let the state ban expire.

With the state ban lifting in Victoria and now NSW, before we know it there won't be any food on our tables that is not genetically engineered.

Learn the Truth About Fluoride in This Revealing Interview with the Award-Winning Author of "The Fluoride Deception

Dr. Mercola's Comment:

As I wrote in the last newsletter issue, Christopher Bryson has written a book that is not only interesting, it is also incredibly important. The Fluoride Deception is much more than a book about the dangers of fluoride–it reveals a multi-tiered effort, or as Bryson says an abuse of power, by military and industry scientists and public health officials to shamelessly promote fluoride to the dentistry field and the American public with little regard to the implications it would have on human health.

If you are not familiar with the controversy surrounding the use of fluoride in water, toothpaste and numerous other products and industries, your mouth will drop as you read this book. If you are, you will be amazed at just how far and wide the cover-up and deceit stretches.

In fact, the evidence is so compelling that you will likely find yourself reading and rereading in disbelief.

In the interview below you will learn the interesting story of how the book came about as well as a shocking piece of information from the book.

I highly recommend The Fluoride Deception to anyone and everyone–the message it contains has the power to change policy and opinions, and will make you question the effects of not only fluoride but also of other "safe" chemicals used openly in our environment today.

The following is from an e-interview that we recently conducted with Christopher Bryson.

What prompted you to write "The Fluoride Deception"?

1. I'm a reporter. I don't know how many modern stories have the same epic reach of history and rich cast of characters as you will find in "The Fluoride Deception."

I stumbled on the story in 1993. I was working in New York as a BBC radio producer and was asked to find "an American angle" on water fluoridation. Ralph Nader put me in touch with a couple of government scientists (William Hirzy at the EPA and Robert Carton at the U.S. Army) who opposed water fluoridation, and explained how the science underpinning the nation's fluoride safety standards was fraudulent.

I met the medical writer Joel Griffiths whose 1992 story in Covert Action Information Bulletin laid out the monumental scale of industrial fluoride poisoning, and explained how industry had long manipulated the public debate over water fluoridation.

I just kept reporting.

I interviewed the famous chemist Philip Sadtler. He told me how he had investigated in the aftermath of the most notorious air pollution disaster in U.S. History, the 1948 Halloween tragedy in Donora, Pennsylvania, in which a couple of dozen people were killed and hundreds were injured. He had measured high levels of fluoride in the blood of local citizens in the disaster aftermath. His work was dismissed at the time, but after Sadtler's death I uncovered a secret autopsy report on one of the Donora dead, performed by Alcoa, which found similar levels of fluoride in the blood. Sadtler had been right, it seems.

2. What piece of information was most shocking to you?

There were several. I uncovered a medical study that had been performed at the Kettering Laboratory at the University of Cincinnati in the late 1950s. The study was paid for by industry and was buried for almost 40 years. It was part of an effort by companies such as U.S. Steel, Alcoa and the TVA, to "provide ammunition" to a self-described Fluorine Lawyers Committee to help those industry attorneys defeat workers and farmers who alleged fluoride poisoning.

But the study found that fluoride was terribly harmful to the experimental animals, damaging their lungs and lymph nodes at modest doses. A scientist who reviewed the study for me said that, if the scientists who set workplace exposure standards had seen the data, then fluoride exposure levels in factories would have been set much lower. Tens of thousands of women and men have likely been poisoned and hurt by fluoride because of this decades-long cover up.

3. Do you have any recommendations for people who want to avoid fluoride as much as possible?

Contact your local politicians and tell them how you feel about this deception. Get active in your community and find out if fluoride is added to public water supplies. Fight for a referendum to get it out. Short term; buy a water filter that removes fluoride. If you are a worker in a factory, get active in your local union and find out about the chemicals that may be present in the work environment. Tell your friends about "The Fluoride Deception."

4. What goals do you hope to achieve with this book?

The book was written to empower. I want readers to understand the issue, so that they can make informed judgments for themselves.

5. Is there a way a person can tell if fluoride is causing them, or has already caused them, health problems?

I'm a reporter, not a doctor. The distinguished allergist Dr. George Waldbott, who first warned us in the 1950s about cigarette smoking and the dangers of allergic reaction to penicillin, found that many people are allergic to even tiny amounts of fluoride.

Fluoride is a systemic poison. It attacks enzymes.

Because enzymes are so important to the body, fluoride intoxication can be manifested in many ways. Dr Waldbott reported that fluoridated water caused, among other symptoms, migraine headaches, bone stiffness, and gastric distress. Those symptoms vanished when his patients stopped drinking fluoridated water.

6. Do you think that water fluoridation will one day become a thing of the past, among the ranks of using asbestos, aspartame, DDT and other chemicals that were once deemed safe?

I hope so, but that ultimately depends on citizens informing themselves and taking action.

7. In "The Fluoride Deception" you mention that no proponents of fluoride would attend the major fluoridation debates in 2001. Can you give a brief explanation as to why you think this is?

Fear. The emperor has no clothes. As the 2000 Nobel Prize winning scientist Arvid Carlsson states in my book:

"Fluoridation violates modern pharmacological principles."

Fluoride defenders know that they will be exposed in public discussion. Thus, the American Dental Association has long told fluoride supporters not to encourage debate. My book also reveals how the legendary public relations wizard Edward L. Bernays suggested in 1960 that the New York City Health Commissioner could suppress public debate by writing to William Paley of CBS and David Sarnoff of NBC, suggesting that debating water fluoridation is like "presenting two sides for Anti-Catholicism or Anti Semitism and therefore not in the public interest."

In his 1928 book "Propaganda," Bernays also noted "the psychological relationship of dependence of men on their physicians" and other such "opinion leaders" in society. "Those who manipulated this unseen mechanism of society," he wrote, "constitute and invisible government, which is the true ruling power of our country … Our minds are made up, our takes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of."

8. Do you have plans to write another book?

I'd love to.

How can I find myself when I am SERIOUSLY disconnected from my feelings?

Please be serious about this one, I've posted a similar ?? Before but maybe I didn't ask it right.

I've never been abused, molested, or anything. No tramatic life experiences so to speak. Now at 25 I find that my feelings and expressions are 'turned off' and I have this deep fear of doing anything. I almost feel like I'm not justified in being me. I have to almost consciously think of everything that I do, even the things in life that come natural because we are who we are. I second guess everything and nothing comes natural, like fun, conversations (which I have to always painfully manufacture), relationships, happiness. I feel dull, lifeless, emotionless and almost not fit to survive on this earth. I have little to no confidence, self esteem, or self concept. This translates into insecurities, anger, frustration, withdrawal and depression. I feel hopeless in life. I would LOVE to be able to feel, function, express myself and be happy with myself but it's like I'm locked up inside of ME and I can't bust out. I'm trying different meds but theres a waiting list for counseling and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions? I'm NOT suicidal but if you can imagine feeling and loving is what life is about and if for some reason you can't experience that then life is not worth living and that is how I feel.

P.S. I lose most of my functional relationships and I have a significant other and I'm wondering if I should even explain this or end it knowing that until I'm fixed I'll never be enough for them or anyone else for that matter?

Wow! I sure do feel for you.

First, you said you were trying different meds. Hopefully that will help. If not, did you know that what you eat and what you do can do the same in improving mood as meds?

In particular:

Exercise- Studies have shown exercising can boost mood. It actually releases chemicals in your brain that produce pleasure. Meds mimic this effect. Doing so gets rid of stress hormones that will circulate until you burn them off. Exercise also allows you to clear your mind and or calm down to solve problems. Exercise can do the same thing as med without sideffects that meds have.

Diet- Research suggests eating foods with omega 3 fatty acids (salmon, nuts), vitamin B12 (salmon, eggs, dairy, fortified cereals), folate (whole grains, lentils, broccoli, oranges), magnesium (pumpkin, nuts, brown rice) vitamin D (dairy, eggs, fortified foods) helps improve mood.

Going outside- helps your body make vitamin D (you only need 10 minutes during peak sunlight hours—wear sunscreen if you will be out longer than that). Researchers have found that being outside (especially in a serene nature setting) helps people to relax and improves mood.

Humor- Smiling and laughing benefit our bodies and minds. Did you know that just smiling releases feel good effects in our brains? Some people have "cured" themselves from illnesses by watching funny movies.

Meditation or yoga- research shows it can improves quality of sleep (which you need for both physical and mental health), decreases stress hormones, decreases chronic pain.

Music- Listening to music is another healthy natural way that you can activate your reward center in your brain. Also, slow music can calm you. Music you enjoy and/or with a positive message can lift your spirits

Journaling and/or Artistic Expression- Can help you release tension, you to identify stressors and develop strategies to cope

Volunteering- Other studies have shown that doing volunteer work is just as effective as depression medicine. Doing this helps you take the focus off your own problems, feel for others that may be worse off for yourself, and genuinely feel good about helping someone else out. Volunteering like a lot of these other options will also activate the reward center in your brain which helps improve your mood.

In addition to these things above, you may benefit from seeing a counselor or getting some literature that deals with the following:

There are sites out there that explain the different types of therapy
Http://www.creativegrowth.com/besttx.htm

Based on what you've written, I think you would benefit from some combination of cognitive-behavior therapy (which deals with your thoughts and behaviors that are causing you pain), existentialism (which if done right can help you make meaning of your life and your struggles), art therapy (can be really helpful in discovering emotions, and depending on your belief system spiritual counseling.

If you believe in God, the book The Search for Significance (Robert McGee) could probably REALLY HELP YOU! I've found it very helpful myself and have passed it on to several family members. It addresses all of the things you listed above and basically says that we are all worthy and are fit to survive we all deserve confidence etc. It really can bring hope and self-acceptance and that sounds like what you are looking for. Even if you do not believe in God, it may be worth a shot to read it…

I've also heard that The Secret is good.
I have not personally read this but others have told me it has helped them become more positive and find meaning.

In the meantime, it may help you to begin a journal and each day find at least five things that you are thankful for. I have personally tried this and have found that it has helped me to think more positively and look for the good in my life instead of focusing on the bad. Also, you could write down a thing or two each day that you appreciate specifically about yourself–this can give you a better appreciation of your personal strengths.

As already mentioned Cognitive and Behavior therapy may help you too. Books that could help you with this:

I hope something here helps you! GOOD LUCK!!!

Can you give me advice on health?

I want to change my over all diet, but I don't know where to start. Can someone please explain health eating rules so I can get healthy and lose weight because I am really struggling esp. With proportion control!! Also exercise would advice would be helpful..

Feel your best from head to toe!

If you're convinced you need to make dramatic changes in order to improve your health, we've got good news. It doesn't have to be that hard. We've found 50 simple, good-for-you moves to improve your health from head to toe — no life altering required.

Brain

Breathe deeply and count to 10.
Bottling up anger is the biggest predictor of headaches, even more than depression or anxiety, according to a new study from Saint Louis University.
Eat the Mediterranean way.
The Italian Longitudinal Study of Aging found that people who ate a diet high in mono — and polyunsaturated fatty acids did better on cognitive tests. Good sources include olive oil, butter, cheese and fish.
Get more zzz's.
Sleep deprivation can affect your ability to concentrate, remember information and perform mental tasks.
Watch less TV.
"Watching TV is to your brain what sitting on the couch is to your body: complete absence of use," says David Niven, Ph.D., author of The 100 Simple Secrets of Healthy People. Instead, read or do a crossword puzzle to keep your brain active and fend off diseases such as Alzheimer's.
Take up a musical instrument.
Musical training enhances your brain's ability to remember words, according to University of Hong Kong researchers.
Add cranberries to your diet.
University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth scientists have linked cranberry consumption to stroke protection. Early evidence suggests that the berries may reduce the oxidative damage to the brain that occurs during a stroke.

Eyes
Check your computer setup. To avoid eye strain, make sure your monitor is centered in front of you, about an arm's length away, with the top of the screen near eye level. Keep the glass clean to avoid glare, and take time to adjust the brightness, contrast and font size to comfortable levels.
Have an omelette. Eggs, along with colorful fruits and leafy green vegetables, contain large amounts of lutein, which helps fight macular degeneration and cataracts.

Teeth
Easy does it when you brush.
A recent British study found that people who brush longer or harder than necessary can actually erode their gums and tooth enamel.
Rinse wisely.
Although a mouth rinse can freshen breath and prevent cavities, it may also mask symptoms of poor oral health, according to Loyola University Health System researchers. Sometimes an unpleasant taste in your mouth can signal oral health problems such as periodontal disease.
Drink tea.
A University of Illinois study found that black tea may impede cavity-causing plaque bacteria.

Say "om."
Meditation helps you relax, which slows your breathing and heart rate. It also helps lower blood pressure and reduces your risk for blood clots.
Drink pomegranate juice.
This colorful fruit is high in antioxidants called polyphenols, which can help reduce atherosclerosis (arterial plaque), a major risk factor for heart disease.
Bond with Mom.
The Harvard Mastery of Stress Study found that those who reported a loving and caring relationship with their parents were less likely to have a serious illness such as high blood pressure or heart disease.
Eat soy.
To reduce cholesterol levels, add foods such as tofu or edamame (soybeans) to your diet five times a week, says Somer. Get a pet. "An animal is a huge stress reliever, and a recent study found that spending time with your pet reduces high blood pressure by fifteen percent," says Dr. Niven.
Get a flu shot.
Older people who got a flu shot were 19 percent less likely to be hospitalized for heart disease than those who didn't, according to a study in The New England Journal of Medicine. Researchers think influenza and pneumonia may trigger heart disease by damaging blood vessels and limiting blood flow.
Skip the elevator.
"The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has found that if you climb up and down just three flights a day you'll improve your cardiovascular health and lose about ten pounds over the course of a year," says Dr. Niven
Listen to slow music at mealtimes.
"A recent study found that participants who ate while listening to fast music consumed two more mouthfuls a minute than those who listened to slow music," says Dr. Niven. "We subconsciously mimic the beat, and the faster you eat, the more likely you are to overeat."
Get more calcium.
This powerful nutrient can protect your colon as well as your bones. Swedish researchers have found an association between high dietary intake of calcium and vitamin D and a decreased risk of colorectal cancer.
Know when to say when.
Researchers from Stony Brook University linked heavy alcohol consumption (at least nine drinks a week for more than 10 years) to a higher rate of colorectal cancer or polyps. However, moderate consumption of wine was shown to have a protective effect.
Limit antacid intake.
A new study from Austria suggests that over-using antacid tablets may increase the risk of food allergies by possibly interfering with digestion.
Take a vitamin E supplement.
High blood levels of alpha-tocopherol, a form of vitamin E, may lower the risk of developing cancer of the stomach and esophagus, according to new research from China.
Have a cup o' joe.
German researchers have found an antioxidant in coffee that may protect against colon cancer. Avoiding caffeine? Decaf also contains the same compound.

Many drugs, such as heroin, cocaine and alcohol, inhibit the growth of new cells in the hippocampus, which scientists believe could emotionally destabilize addicts. Understanding how drugs affect the hippocampus may have a critical role in treating addiction.Neuropsychologist Xia Zhang and a team of researchers based at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Canada, aimed to find out just how marijuana-like drugs, known collectively as cannabinoids, act on the brain.

The researchers injected rats with HU210, a synthetic drug that is about one-hundred times as powerful as THC, the high-inducing compound naturally found in marijuana. They then used a chemical tracer to watch new cells growing in the hippocampus.

They found that HU210 seemed to induce new brain cell growth, just as some antidepressant drugs do, they report in the Journal of Clinical Investigation. This suggests that they could potentially be used to reduce anxiety and depression, Zhang says. He adds that the research might help to create new cannabinoid-based treatments.

"I think it's a very exciting study," says Amelia Eisch, an addiction researcher at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. "It makes marijuana look more like an antidepressant and less like a drug of abuse."

Analysis of Studies Finds Little Effect From Long-Term Use
By Sid Kirchheimer
WebMD Health News
July 1, 2003 — Long-term and even daily marijuana use doesn't appear to cause permanent brain damage, adding to evidence that it can be a safe and effective treatment for a wide range of diseases, say researchers.

The researchers found only a "very small" impairment in memory and learning among long-term marijuana users. Otherwise, scores on thinking tests were similar to those who don't smoke marijuana, according to a new analysis of 15 previous studies.

In those studies, some 700 regular marijuana users were compared with 484 non-users on various aspects of brain function — including reaction time, language and motor skills, reasoning ability, memory, and the ability to learn new information.

Surprising Finding:

"We were somewhat surprised by our finding, especially since there's been a controversy for some years on whether long-term cannabis use causes brain damage," says lead researcher and psychiatrist Igor Grant, MD.

"I suppose we expected to see some differences in people who were heavy users, but in fact the differences were very minimal."

The marijuana users in those 15 studies — which lasted between three months to more than 13 years — had smoked marijuana several times a week or month or daily. Still, researchers say impairments were less than what is typically found from using alcohol or other drugs.

Brain Shrinkage and Alcoholic Behavior:

The shrinkage observed seems to be more extensive in the cortex of the frontal lobe, which is believed to be the seat of higher intellectual functions. This shrinkage generally increases with age, at least in men.
Repeated imaging of a group of alcoholics who continued drinking over a 5-year period revealed progressive brain shrinkage that significantly exceeded normal age-related shrinkage. The rate of frontal cortex shrinkage correlates closely with the amount of alcohol consumed.

But this shrinkage has also been observed in deeper brain regions, including brain structures associated with memory, as well as in the cerebellum, which helps regulate coordination and balance.

Are illegals receiving better health care that veterans?

Illegal immigrants Get Better Health Care Then US Vets!

Illegal immigrants depressed wages in Arizona to the tune of $1.4 billion in 2006 and dipped lower-skilled legal workers’ pay by 4.7 percent.

That is according to a study by a Harvard University economist commissioned by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office. The MCAO had the study done as part of its defense of the state’s new employer sanctions law.

Business and Hispanic groups have challenged that law questioning its validity and arguing it would hurt the state’s economy.

The study by Harvard economist George Borjas said hiring illegal immigrants depresses wages because they work for lower pay and sometimes are paid under the table. The study said illegal immigrants primarily impact wages and jobs held by legal workers with lower education levels. Borjas said that illegals make up 10 percent of all state workers and decrease all wages by 1.5 percent.

Before our last election for change:

As the left proclaims that there will be a massive Latino voter turnout in 2008, more and more cities across the nation are claiming that they can’t stop voter fraud among illegal aliens.

Study: Illegals depress wages by $1.4 billion in Arizona- Source=Phoenix Business Journal .

They cost the state about $1.4 billion in services, this is only Arizona.

Arizona consistently has one of the nation’s highest rates of fatal hit-and-run crashes.

And some statistical evidence suggests the state’s large number of illegal immigrants is one reason.
But to many traffic safety experts and insurance industry officials, there is at least circumstantial evidence that people illegally in the country contribute to the hit-and-run problem.

The seven states with the highest rates of fatal hit-and-run crashes are also the seven states that have the most illegal immigrants, according to two think tanks. Both the Pew Hispanic Center and Center for Immigration Studies rank Arizona fifth and put its illegal immigrant population at about 500,000, or 9 percent of all state residents.
Arizona led the nation in another category that may be tied to illegal immigration: one in 12 drivers in fatal accidents had no license at all. New Mexico and Texas, two other border states, ranked second and third in that measure.
Arizona’s high rates of unlicensed drivers and hit-and-run crashes are “joined at the hip,” said Dave Willis, a senior research scientist at the Texas Transportation Institute who has studied traffic safety issues for 30 years.
Gustavo Soto, a supervisory agent with the Border Patrol’s Tucson Sector, said smugglers of illegal immigrants or illegal drugs often are involved in fatal hit-and-runs in this part of the state. “They’re driving reckless, and they’re driving in shoddy vehicles,” Soto said.

Ahr said smugglers and illegal immigrants often leave the scene of a wreck to avoid being deported. Many of the vehicles used to transport illegal immigrants are stolen or rented, he added. If the government can turn its back on health care for military veterans, as it announced it would last week, then cutting off illegal aliens shouldn’t be too tough.

“All veterans and their families are painfully aware of the uphill struggle to obtain medical services at Veteran’s Affairs hospitals and clinics. We have to provide a ream of personal, financial, and military documentation just to get “in” the system. Once the information is validated then we are informed what our “share” of the medical expenses will be. If we submit the information in March, and we lose our job in April, we have to wait a full year for the VA to reassess our co-payment. With past funding cuts it is not unusual for a veteran to have to travel across several counties to reach a VA medical center.

Meanwhile, the illegal simply presents himself to the nearest hospital for a complete smorgasbord of free medical services. This “squatter” enjoys all of the freedoms that the veteran has fought for, with none of the pain, suffering, or expenses associated with them…

The Florida Hospital Association surveyed 28 hospitals and found that health care for illegal aliens totaled at least $40 million in 2002! So you can see this problem is nation wide!

Illegal immigrants may not know much about medical care. But one thing they do know: they get a better deal in the U.S. Than they do in Mexico.

Illegal aliens have cost billions of taxpayer-funded dollars for medical services. Dozens of hospitals in Texas, New Mexico Arizona, and California, have been forced to close or face bankruptcy because of federally-mandated programs requiring free emergency room services to illegal aliens. Taxpayers pay half-a-billion dollars per year incarcerating illegal alien criminals. Immigration is a net drain on the economy; corporate interests reap the benefits of cheap labor, while taxpayers pay the infrastructural cost. Research shows “the net annual cost of immigration has been estimated at between
“the net annual cost of immigration has been estimated at between $67 and $87 billion a year. The National Academy of Sciences found that the net fiscal drain on American taxpayers is between $166 and $226 a year per native household. Even studies claiming some modest overall gain for the economy from immigration ($1 to $10 billion a year) have found that it is outweighed by the fiscal cost ($15 to $20 billion a year) to native taxpayers.”

80% of cocaine and 50% of heroin in the U.S. Is smuggled across the border by Mexican nationals. Drug cartels spend a half-billion dollars per year bribing Mexico’s corrupt generals and police officials, and armed confrontations between the Mexican army and U.S. Border Patrol agents are a real threat. There have been 118 documented incursions by the Mexican military over the last five years.

I knew this man that fell and hit his head and he had to wait almost 2 weeks to get into a Dr at the VA.But he got real sick before his appointment so his daughter took him to the hosp she worked at instead. He complained about it because he couldn't afford it he knew it would cost him more then he got from SS that month. But she took him anyway. It was discovered that he was bleeding inside his brain from the fall.He died 4 days later. That was my father and Im the one that works at the hosp where he died.I see it everyday.Illegals coming in to our ER and not paying an dime. But my father didn't come in because he couldn't afford it,he would just wait for his appointment with the VA.So do you think our govt treats illegals better then they do their Vets I would have to say yes.My father if he had lived would have been hounded day and night for this payment while the illegal would go on his merry way.At least until he needed free services again. An again he would get that service and not pay.You probably know someone that don't see a Dr, because like my father, worried that he wouldn't be able to pay while the illegal mother will come in a pop out a kid every year without a care in the world. When will our govt open its eyes to these people and see that yes, there are many good ones out there but they are still illegal and our citizens should always come first before an illegal whether in the hosp or at the grocery store. If the welfare system is going broke then they need to be the 1st to go.Even our lazy americans that has lived off of welfare all their lives has more right to welfare then an illegal. At least they are americans.Edit::: I just read some of your other answers and I guess people dont think of going to an ER and skipping out on the bill is welfare or an illegal mother having her baby and medicaid paying HER bill as well as the babies isnt welfare or how about the illegal family checking out in a grocery line and using food stamps to buy that steak or ground meat that the WHOLE family will eat not just the anchor children that get it becasue the are "americans"isnt welfare. Will let me tell you its is welfare and illegals do get it.Think about that next time you have to pay your own way when sick, hungry and you have to dig deep into your pockets for these things in life.

Why Did Charle's Whitman Do The Clock Tower Shooting?

What Was His Reason Why? What Was The Cause?

Whitman had a brain tumor and severe family problems.

Charles Whitman grew up in an upper-middle class family headed by a father who owned a successful plumbing contract business in Lake Worth, Florida. Whitman excelled at academics and was well liked by his peers and neighbors. There were underlying dysfunctional issues within the family that escalated in 1966, when his mother left his father and moved to Texas. The elder Whitman was an authoritarian who provided for his family, but demanded near perfection from all of them. He was also known to become physically and emotionally abusive.

Whitman's frustrations with his dysfunctional family were complicated by abuse of amphetamines and health issues including headaches that he reported in one of his final notes as "tremendous."[5] A glioblastoma, which is a highly cancerous brain tumor, was discovered during autopsy that experts on the "Connally Commission" claimed may have conceivably played a role in causing his actions. He was also affected by a court martial as a United States Marine, failings as a student at the University of Texas, ambitious personal expectations and psychotic features he expressed in his typewritten note left at 906 Jewell Street, Austin, Texas, dated both July 31, 1966 and later by hand "3 A.M., both dead August 1, 1966".

Several months prior to the tragedy, he was summoned to Lake Worth, Florida to pick up his mother who was filing for divorce from his father. The stress caused by the break-up of the family became a dominant discussion between Whitman and a psychiatrist at the University of Texas Health Center on March 29, 1966.

Eating peanuts brain health?

I have some stress, and anxiety problems that in certain situations can really make me freak out, one extreme example is going to my moms house, i had a lot of problems around HS graduation that really mad life miserable.

I recently had another "attack" and started eating honey roasted peanuts, and felt better soon after. Is there a reason why i calm down when i eat them? They are one of my favorite foods, and i am underweight for my age.

Any other tips for anxiety and stress would be helpful.

MAIN QUESTIONS:
Why do the peanuts help?
Tips for anxiety.

Yes, eating is relaxing. There is a part of your brain devoted to making you want to have sex and eat. They call it "comfort food" for a very good reason. That is also why alot of people get very very fat. They learn that eating makes them feel better and eat whenever there is the slightest bit of stress.

If it works for you and it's under control, hell it might even help if you are super skinny, then it's all cool. But you can't just eat peanuts when you're wife kills herself after the baby dies suddenly in your 20s, or something bug like that. You need to take this time to develop the skills to deal with stress. The biggest trick is to just take it. Sit with the feelings and trust that they will go away on their own. Know that you don't have to act on feelings. You don't have to eat or fight or run or quit your job etc. You can just find a quiet spot and sit still for a while.

Life's only going to get harder. You're going to deal with stress whether you like it or not. The outcome of that is your decision.
